Hazak to Host "Movie and a Nosh"

Hazak members are invited to join together for "Movie
and a Nosh." Attendees will be treated to "A Stranger Among
Us," a 1992 film starring Melanie Griffith, who plays an undercover
officer working within the Hasidic community in New York City.
Preceding the movie, a box lunch including egg salad
or tuna salad, chips, cookie, and beverages and popcorn will be served
during the show. Cost is $6 per person.
A relaxing, entertaining afternoon is assured for all,

World-Herald Reporter Kotok
To Discuss Iraq Experience

Veteran World-Herald reporter (and Beth El congregant)
C. David Kotok will share his recent experience as an embedded reporter
in Iraq at a special community event on Sunday, February 19 at the Jewish
Community Center. Kotok was sent to Iraq last year by the World-Herald,
to cover the daily lives and experiences of Nebraskans and Iowans fighting
in the war.
The 1:30 p.m. gathering will be co-sponsored by Beth
El’s Hazak group, Visions, AMIT Women, Jewish Women International,
B’nai B’rith Men, Hadassah, Beth El Men’s Club, the
Jewish Historical Society, LOVE, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish
Community Center, Beth Israel Synagogue and 39 Forever. A dessert reception,
sponsored by Jewish Senior Services, will follow Kotok’s presentation.
"I encourage everyone to attend and make this
a truly ‘Omaha Jewish community event’ to honor David for
his courage and contributions to objective journalism," said organizer
Jim Wax, who serves as both Hazak president and chairman of Visions.

Beth El's Hazak Group Receives National Award
Beth El Synagogue's L'Chaim chapter of Hazak
has been selected to receive the Solomon Schechter Award for Excellence
in Synagogue Programming. This award is presented to congregations affiliated
with the United Synagogue that have distinguished themselves during
the preceding two years in aspects of congregational life. For the past
55 years, the Schecter Awards, named after the founder of the United
Synagogue, have been presented to organizations which show imaginative
and creative use of resources, as well as a positive impact on the congregation's
membership.
Hazak, the United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism's organization for Jews ages 55 and up, was established to provide
programming for and address the needs of senior citizens who are members
of congregations ffiliated with USCJ. Hazak affirms the traditional
Jewish view that mature adults should have the opportunity to continue
to learn and be active in their congregations, their communities and
among themselves.
Since its establishment several years ago, Beth El's
Hazak chapter has served a vital role at the synagogue, sponsoring
a variety of creative programs that include study, prayer, entertainment
and socialization.
The Solomon Schechter Awards will be presented at the
USCJ International Biennial Convention, to be held this December in
Boston.

Hazak and Sisterhood, for their generous donation of
a multi-media projector for the entire synagogue to enjoy. This projector
is compatible with DVD and video players, as well as computers, and
will provide us with endless educational and entertainment possibilities.
Thanks to these two groups, our synagogue can now be transformed into

Beth El to Host Community-Wide
Stem-Cell Research Panel Discussion
Sunday, November 6, 2005 at 2pm
An informative and thought-provoking panel discussion
exploring the issues surrounding stem-cell research will be held at
2 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, at Beth El Synagogue. The entire community
is invited to attend this free event, which is being co-sponsored by
the synagogue's Hazak group and Hadassah.
Panelists will include Toby Schonfeld, PhD, Assistant
Professor, Section on Humanities and Law, Department of Preventive and
Societal Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center; Howard
Gendelman, M.D., chairman of the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and
director of the Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Diseases
(CNND); UNMC Professor John Sharp, PhD, who works in the areas of radiation
and oncology; and Sanford Goodman, chairman of the Public Policy and
Advocacy Committee for Nebraskans for Research. Hazak President Jim
Wax will moderate the discussion.
Topics to be explored will include the speakers' viewpoints
regarding the hoals and accomplishments of stem-cell research, the variety
of diseases which might benefit from such research, and their views
regarding if and why fetal stem-cell research is needed.

Hazak Group Plans Installation Ceremony
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 6:30 p.m.
Hazak, Beth El Synagogue’s organization
for congregants ages 55 and up, will install officers and board members
for the upcoming year at its annual dinner, to be held at 6:30 on Wednesday,
August 10 at the synagogue. Rabbi Mordechai Levin will lead the installation;
entertainment will be provided by singer Jonathan Rathsam and pianist
Esther Wax.
The 2005-’06 officers and board members include:

Is Chicken Soup Really Therapeutic?

Rennard teaches us Everything You Wanted to Learn about Chicken
Soup That Your Bubbe Didn't Tell You. Dr. Rennard, a pulmonologist
at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will entertain attendees
with his findings about the benefits of chicken soup, based on his research
of soups made by his wife, mother and mother-in-law. The entire community
is invited to attend this lively 1pm presentation sponsored by Hazak.
Preceding Dr. Rennard's discussion, lunch will be served
at 12:15pm, including chicken salad, dessert, and of course, chicken

Hazak Installation
August 25, 2004 6pm
Rabbi Paul and Susie Drazen will be back at Beth El
on August 25 to participate in Hazak’s installation event. The
Drazens will help install the incoming officers; afterward, Rabbi Drazen,
director of the Mid-Continent Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism, will address the attendees. Social hour will begin at 6pm,
with dinner at 7pm; installation will follow. Look for more details

Hazak 4th of July Event
Old Country Buffet, 7pm
The evening begins as Hazak friends and family meet
at the Old Country Buffet at 144th and Center Road for a
buffet dinner at 7:00 p.m. At 8:30, everyone will gather in the Beth
El parking lot to view the fireworks from Girls and Boys Town. Bring

Hazak Meeting to Include
Book Discussion of Postville
Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 9am
"Postville," a book by Stephen Bloom, will
be discussed at the next Hazak meeting, at 9 a.m. on Wed., April 14,
according to Alan Goodman. The book chronicles Chabad’s purchase
of a slaughter-house in northeastern Iowa, and the group’s relationship
with the local population and state government.
Goodman added that the same group of Lubavitchers recently
purchased a slaughter-house in Gordon, Nebraska, and plans to extend
their operation there. Please plan on joining us for an interesting

First Hazak Shabbat
Saturday, April 17, 2004
Our "seasoned ‘n spicy" citizens will
host the entire congregation at Beth El’s first Hazak
Shabbat on April 17, followed by a special Lunch ‘n’ Learn
program. "All of our interested members will have opportunities
to participate in this wonderful service," said Hazak
president Jim Wax, noting that responsibilities include opening the
Ark, reading Torah, chanting Haftarah, taking aliyot, leading
English and Hebrew prayers, and delivering the D’var Torah.
Hazak members are urged to fill out their sign-up sheet (recently
mailed in a flier), and return it to the synagogue as soon as possible.
Death Penalty to be Discussed
At Beth El Lunch and Learn
April 17, 2004 following Shabbat Morning Services
Religious and legal aspects of the death penalty will
take center stage at a special Lunch and Learn event at Beth El Synagogue
on Saturday, April 17, following Shabbat services.
"The Death Penalty: Do Religious and Legal Views
Conflict?" will be discussed by a panel including Creighton University
Law Professor Larry Raful, who will address the Jewish view of the death
penalty; Creighton Theology Professor Thomas Kelly, who will present
the Catholic perspective; and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning,
who will discuss his legal duties and obligations regarding the death
penalty in this state.
The luncheon, sponsored by Beth El's Hazak
group, is open to the community. Cost is $7.50 for Hazak members; $9.50
for non-members; $5 for children. Sitter service will be available upon
request.
