Rabbi Levin’s Page
Rabbi Mordechai Levin joined Beth El Synagogue in August 2002. He received his rabbinic ordination from the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary (Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano Marshall T. Meyer), and is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly, the international organization of 1,600 Conservative rabbis.
Since coming to Beth El, he has worked to strengthen the religious, educational and social life within the synagogue, to bring people closer to an understanding, appreciation and practice of Judaism, and to serve the pastoral needs of the congregants.
In addition to his synagogue responsibilities, he is a current member of the Jewish Federation's Board of Trustees, the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, the Friedel Jewish Academy, and the World Council of Conservative Synagogues.
Prior to coming to Beth El Synagogue, Rabbi Levin served as senior rabbi of one of Buenos Aires’ most prominent Conservative synagogues. During that time, he distinguished himself as a leading rabbi in Argentina's Jewish community. He is a past president, a past secretary and a founder of the Latin American region of the Rabbinical Assembly; he is also a past secretary of the Board of Rabbis of Latin America (Union de Rabinos de America Latina).
At the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary, Rabbi Levin held the position of Placement Director, and in this capacity he managed the placement process for rabbis; in addition, he served as the Director of the Institute for Conversion to Judaism, and taught rabbinical students courses in “Halakhah” and “Practical Rabbinics.”
He is the editor of “Resolutions of the Rabbinical Assembly,” a compilation of hundreds of resolutions adopted at the annual conventions, and “Halakhic Decisions of the Rabbinical Assembly,” a summary of all the decisions adopted by the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards. He has translated into Spanish “Triennial Cycle for Reading the Torah,” as well as articles and guides about Conservative Judaism. In addition, his articles and opinion pieces have appeared in a variety of Jewish and non-Jewish media.
Rabbi Levin has participated in Jewish-Christian conferences, has contributed as a consultant on interreligious affairs for the major Argentinean organization which represents all Jewish organizations, and was part of the Jewish delegation during the Latin American Jewish/Catholic Consultation, co-sponsored by the Latin American Council of Bishops
and the Latin American Jewish Congress.
