Whole Lotta Bakin’ Goin’ On


Join the Sisterhood baking brigade and help us bake and package hamantaschen for Purim! Baking dates are will be Sundays, Feb. 4 and 11, 2007, from 9 .m. to 1 p.m., and we invite you to come for an hour, or spend the whole morning with us! Come alone or bring spouses and children – make this a real family affair! Also, teenagers who help out will earn community service hours – what a delicious way to earn credit! We’re also calling for volunteers to help us pass out orders on Sunday, February 25 and March 3.

Baking hamantaschen is a fun-filled tradition at Beth El, and serves as a wonderful fund-raiser for Sisterhood – we hope you’ll roll your sleeves up and help us out! If you’re interested in baking, please contact Caryn Rifkin 334-7216, or via e-mail at CRGR6175@aol.com.

Annual Hamantaschen Sale Is Underway: Order Yours Now!


Purim is just around the corner, so if you’re dreaming of sinking you teeth into some sweet and scrumptious hamantaschen, now’s your chance. Sisterhood is once again baking and selling these terrific holiday treats for only $5 a dozen, and they’ll take your order now. Choose from poppy seed, apricot, cherry and prune hamantaschen – at these low prices, why not buy all four?

Orders must be received by Thursday, February 8, 2007. Order forms are available in the synagogue office, or by sending a check – made payable to Beth El Sisterhood – to the synagogue, 14506 California St., Omaha NE 68154. Be sure to specify flavor and number desired.

Your hamantaschen will be ready for pick-up in the social hall on Sunday, February 25 from 11 a.m. to noon, or Sunday, March 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., during the Purim carnival. And remember, all proceeds benefit our Sisterhood, which generously supports a variety of Beth El programming and activities, so satisfy your sweet tooth and help out the synagogue – order yours today!

Sisterhood Shabbat Planned for Feb. 3


Please join us for our annual Sisterhood Shabbat on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. This special service will be led by the women of Beth El, and will be followed by a delicious Sisterhood-sponsored Kiddush luncheon. Bring your family and friends, and spend Shabbat with your Beth El family.

Sisterhood’s Fourth Annual Boutique

Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Once again, our Beth El Sisterhood has outdone itself in planning another exciting Boutique, which promises a fantastic day of shopping, noshing and fun! Be sure to swing by the synagogue on Sunday, December 3 anytime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and you’ll be treated to merchandise by over 23 talented artists and vendors – perfect gifts for birthdays and Hanukkah! In addition, get in on the fun of an ongoing, all-day raffle, as well as lots of food, including breakfast provided by our USY kids, a pizza and salad luncheon provided by Men’s Club, and a delicious all-cookie bake sale (satisfy your sweet tooth while you shop!). This year’s Boutique is being chaired by M’Lee Hasslinger; all proceeds from the event will be used to repair the synagogue’s Torahs.

Vendors will offer items such as hand-made glass-fused art, mosaic artwork, jewelry (antique, sterling silver and hand-made), personalized stationery, baskets, Judaic art, kitchen items, beauty items (lotion and make-up), whimsical women’s accessories, home décor, cookbooks, children’s items, purses and hand-knitted clothing.

Raffle tickets, going for 50 cents apiece, are on sale every Sunday in our Judaica Shop – and on the day of Boutique, a raffle prize will be given away every 15 minutes! In addition, the Judaica shop will be open all afternoon during the event, offering a wonderful selection of Hanukkah gifts, as well as a beautiful array of Judaica items and holiday pieces for every Jewish home.

There’s something for everyone during this fabulous event -- Sisterhood has planned a great afternoon for all, so be sure to stop by!

Sisterhood’s Honey Sale Is Underway!


Rosh Hashanah is right around the corner, which means it’s that time of year again – time to order some delicious honey to send to loved ones for a sweet new year! Our Sisterhood’s annual honey sale is underway, with orders being taken through August 21,2006, so place your order today! (Please note: late orders will not be accepted.)

Cost of the festively-wrapped six-ounce bottles are: one to 10 bottles, $5.75 each; 11-29, $5.50 each; $5.25 each for 35 or more. Every order will include a special New Year’s greeting, and both in-town and out-of-town orders are welcomed. All proceeds from the sale benefit Beth El Sisterhood, which helps to fund synagogue youth activities, education, and community/social services.

Sisterhood Establishes Women’s Health Symposium

In Memory of Karin Levine


Our Sisterhood is proud to announce the establishment of the Karin Levine Health Symposium, an annual event celebrating its kick-off on Sunday, September 17, 2006 in the Jewish Community Center Theater.

This year’s symposium, chaired by Carole Lainof, will offer a panel discussion addressing the fact and fiction of women’s health issues, including breast cancer, osteoporosis and menopause. This seminar has been named in memory of Karin Levine, a Creighton University professor and Beth El congregant who passed away last year. More details about the symposium will be forthcoming in your September Kol.

During Sisterhood’s Salsa Night

Put on those dancing shoes and head to Beth El as our Sisterhood presents Salsa Night, a festive evening of dancing and socializing for the 18-and-up crowd in the Jewish community! Beth El will be transformed into a Latin paradise as attendees enjoy tropical drinks, lively music and salsa lessons from Lena Bogomolni, who is co-hosting the event along with Cantor Gastón.

Appetizers, drinks and desserts will be served during the evening; the cost is $10 per person. Look for more details in your March Kol and plan to spend a delightful evening dancing the night away!

Save the Date for Sisterhood Shabbat

Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 9:30 am

Join us for our annual Sisterhood Shabbat! This special service, led by the women of Beth El, will begin at 9:30am and will be highlighted by an enlightening D’var Torah by our scholar-in-residence, Dr. Adolfo Roitman.

A delicious Sisterhood sponsored Kiddush luncheon will follow, with Dr. Roitman ddressing the topic of "Esther and Judith in Jewish Literature and Art and Their Relevance for Modern Feminist Approaches."

Hamantaschen Sale!

Beth El's Sisterhood is selling Hamantaschen again. Celebrate Purim by helping Sisterhood bake and/or hand out orders of Hamantaschen. The annual baking event is February 12, 19, 26. Handing out orders will take place March 5 and 12.

"Make It/Take It" Cooking Class

Sunday, December 18, 2005 1:30 p.m.

If you've always wanted to learn how to make potato latkes, rugelach, mandel bread, and yes, Lucy's famous peanut butter balls, then be sure to mark Sunday, December 18, 1:30 p.m. on your calendar and join our Sisterhood group for their Make it/Take It cooking class!

Guest chefs will include congregants Daniel Christensen and Wayne Lainof, who will whip up some tasty and mouth-watering treats - and the best part is, you get to take the finished goodies home. Such a deal! All ages are welcome to enjoy this special class. Cost is $5 per person; please make your reservations by calling the synagogue office.

The halls of our synagogue will be buzzing with excitement and activity on Sunday, December 4, as Sisterhood holds its third annual Beth El Boutique from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will be filled with shopping, a raffle, and of course, lots of food, including breakfast provided by our USY kids, and a cheese pizza and salad lunch, provided by Men’s Club! All proceeds from the event will be used to repair the synagogue’s Torahs.

According to Caryn Rifkin, who is co-chairing Boutique along with Patti Adler, vendors will be selling items such as hand-made glass-fused art, mosaic artwork, jewelry (antique, sterling silver and hand-made), personalized stationery, baskets, Judaic art, kitchen items, beauty items (lotion and make-up), whimsical women’s accessories, home décor, cookbooks, children’s items, purses and hand-knitted clothing. Have a hankering for some scrumptious sweets? Then you won’t want to miss the Boutique’s delicious kosher bake sale, which will feature Lucy’s famous peanut butter balls, along with such mouth-watering goodies as strudel, cookies, apple cake, mandel bread and brownies.
