Cantor Gil Ezring has been serving as Hazzan at Bet Torah Congregation in Mount Kisco, NY since 2020. With an extensive background and passion for music in its varying styles, Cantor Ezring constantly strives to engage people through song and prayer.
Cantor Ezring graduated from the H.L. Miller Cantorial School at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the premier Cantorial training program of the Conservative movement. Since then, he has continued to learn new and meaningful ways to express and teach our prayers and sacred texts. From choirs to bands, classical Hazzanut to rock and roll, Cantor Ezring believes that every style of music has a place within the Jewish tradition and that every generation adds their own voices to our ever growing tradition while always remembering the voices of the past. With that sentiment in mind, Cantor Ezring keeps his grandfather, Rabbi Cantor Abraham Ezring (a founding member of the Cantors Assembly), in mind every time he leads a service and when he collaborates with his sister, Aviva, to write new Jewish music. He has even worked with volunteer rock bands, to create new and exciting prayer opportunities such as Rock HaShanah, a rock service he created with his father, Rabbi Murray Ezring, for Temple Israel in Charlotte, NC where he grew up.
Utilizing his background in education, Cantor Ezring helps members of the Jewish community of all ages learn new ways to connect to our vast musical tradition including teaching Torah trope classes for youths, teens, and adults to his Rockin’ the Tradition class on contemporary Jewish music. He has also mentored teenage musicians to participate in services and to be music teachers in Hebrew schools. He enjoys being a music teacher in Hebrew schools and nursery schools and can be seen donning a dinosaur costume and becoming the “Cantorsaurus” to educate and entertain his students.
Outside of the synagogue, Cantor Ezring enjoys watching movies, playing board games, and family song & dance parties with his wife, Cantor Eryka Velazquez, and their daughter.
