Baseball: The Jewish Sport?

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

 Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/2129204230

Batter up!  Beth El Synagogue is excited to present a unique program  in honor of the 2020 World Series. All baseball fans are invited to participate via Zoom in this engaging program led by baseball enthusiast, Jonathan Lightman.

With a background as an attorney, Jonathan Lightman has over 30 years of professional experience as a lobbyist and nonprofit executive. A native of Los Angeles, Jonathan and his wife, Janis, moved to Sacramento in 1988 where he has served as the local Jewish Community Relations Council Chair, producer and host of his own Jewish radio show, Chai Sierra, and President and now Gabbai Rishon of Mosaic Law Congregation. He also volunteers in several capacities for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, including as Chair of the Shoshana Cardin Awards Committee.

Jonathan’s program will make Jewish texts come alive - with a homer!  This will not simply be about Jewish baseball players; Jonathan will bring a lot of engagement and enthusiasm to his presentation through audio/video clips, trivia questions and more. Participants will feel like they are enjoying a ball game.

A lifelong baseball fan since attending his first game in 1971, Jonathan put together this program for Camp Ramah in Northern California and later showed it to his synagogue. While he has never been to Omaha, he fondly recalls watching Bo Jackson as a member of the Kansas City Royals tear up the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park with his offensive, defensive and base stealing skills. Last summer, Jonathan and his wife made their first trip to Cooperstown where he and a teammate missed winning that day's big trivia contest by one question. As they say, there's always next year.
