Beth El is pleased to continue our robust series of adult education classes taught by Beth El members.  Starting on Wednesday October 14, Beth El member Barry Grossman will be teaching a three part class titled Judaism in Comics on Zoom. The dates will be October 14, 21 and 28 all starting at 6:00 pm.

For Barry, his love of comics started at a young age and has a family history of collecting items.  “When I was seven years old, my parents bought me a subscription to "Walt Disney's Comics and Stories" so I would get a comic in the mail every month.  I was hooked from then on.  When I was 11 years old, I took all my Casper comic books (and there was a great deal of them) and traded them in for Superman and Batman comics at a wonderful book store called the Antiquarium that was located near the Old Market.  My father was a historian and a big collector of ancient coins, stamps, art, etc. and both he and my mother encouraged my brother and I to collect something that we were passionate about.”

Barry believes that comics can create a bigger and more meaningful picture and dialog for the reader.  “Even though I am an avid reader of regular books, the comics have a tendency to create a bigger picture for me (pun intended).  I'm hoping I can surprise students about what one can find in a comic book and hopefully spark an interest that will have them look for a book that they (or family members) may enjoy.  I am planning to share with them certain comics that have depicted Jewish life in the 19th and 20th centuries.”
