Rabbi Abraham and Pastor Johnson are exploring the Book of Daniel as it appears in the Hebrew Bible and the Protestant Old Testament. But there is also a longer version of this Book as found in Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Bibles.
In these additions biblical Daniel is a detective. He writes the wrongs committed by two dirty old men against the virtuous Susanna. And he exposes the folly of worshipping Babylonian deities like Bel and The Dragon. Along the way he is thrown into—and rescued out of—a lions’ den for the second time.
What is crucial for our study is the recognition that these additions, although not part of the rabbinically ordained Bible we revere, were originally composed by Jews for Jews in the period before the formation of Christianity.
With Dr. Greenspoon’s guidance we will come to experience and enjoy these tales in the same way that many Second Temple Jews did.
