Join us as we commemorate the destruction of the temples of ancient Israel. On Saturday night, Ma'ariv & Havdallah will begin at 9:00 pm, followed by the reading of the Book of Eicha (Lamentations). Eicha was written in the aftermath of the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians. At the core of the Book of Eicha is the question of how humans are able to survive in a shattered world. While Eicha begins by discussing the sins committed by the Israelite nation and owning their offense, by the end of the book the nation comes to realize the power and knowledge that can only be found in the depth of suffering. Our custom is to sit on the floor and read Eicha by candle light (or iPhone flashlight) to recreate the somber mood felt at the destruction of the temple.
